This album features two of the most celebrated cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by the renowned soprano Emma Kirkby and the Academy of Ancient Music, conducted by Christopher Hogwood. The cantatas, BWV 82 and 199, are both solo works that explore themes of faith, hope and love in the context of the Lutheran liturgy. The album was recorded in 2003 and released by Decca as part of their L’Oiseau-Lyre series, dedicated to authentic performances of early music. The album received critical acclaim for its expressive and elegant interpretation of Bach’s masterpieces, as well as for Kirkby’s clear and pure voice, which perfectly suits the style and mood of the cantatas.
