Crystal Ball is the sixth studio album by the American rock band Styx, released in 1976. It was the first album to feature Tommy Shaw as the lead vocalist and guitarist, who joined the band after the departure of John Curulewski. The album showcases the band’s diverse musical styles, ranging from hard rock to progressive rock to ballads. The title track, written by Shaw, became one of the band’s signature songs and a staple of their live shows. The album also includes the popular songs “Mademoiselle” and “This Old Man”, as well as the experimental instrumental “Clair de Lune/Ballerina”. Crystal Ball received positive reviews from critics and fans, and peaked at number 66 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was certified gold by the RIAA in 1978.
Crystal Ball is considered to be one of Styx’s most important albums. It marked the band’s transition from a hard rock band to a more pop-oriented band, and it helped to launch their career to new heights. The album is a must-have for any fan of Styx or classic rock.
