Symphony no. 9 “Choral” – Ludwig van Beethoven

Album

Compilation

This album features one of the most famous and influential works of classical music: Symphony no. 9 “Choral” by Ludwig van Beethoven. Composed between 1822 and 1824, this symphony is the last complete one that Beethoven wrote, and the first to include vocal parts in the final movement. The symphony is divided into four movements: Allegro ma non troppo, un poco maestoso; Molto vivace; Adagio molto e cantabile; and Presto – Allegro assai. The fourth movement is based on the poem “Ode to Joy” by Friedrich Schiller, and expresses a universal vision of humanity and brotherhood. The symphony was premiered in Vienna in 1824, and was met with mixed reactions. Some critics praised its originality and power, while others found it too long and complex. However, over time, the symphony has become widely recognized as a masterpiece of Western music, and has been performed and recorded by countless orchestras and choirs around the world. The symphony has also inspired many other composers, such as Gustav Mahler, Anton Bruckner, and Dmitri Shostakovich. The album presents a faithful and expressive rendition of the symphony by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berlin Radio Choir, conducted by Herbert von Karajan. The soloists are Anna Tomowa-Sintow (soprano), Agnes Baltsa (alto), Peter Schreier (tenor), and José van Dam (bass). The album was recorded in 1976, and has been praised for its clarity, balance, and dynamism. The album is a must-have for any classical music lover, and a perfect introduction to Beethoven’s genius and legacy.
