Released in 2003 by Columbia/Legacy, the album features 30 tracks that span Joplin’s career from her early days with Big Brother and the Holding Company to her solo work. The album includes classic hits like “Piece of My Heart”, “Me and Bobby McGee”, “Mercedes Benz” and “Cry Baby”, as well as rare live recordings from Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock and The Ed Sullivan Show. The album also contains three previously unreleased tracks: “To Love Somebody” and “Kozmic Blues” from Woodstock, and a remix of “Mercedes Benz” by Medicine Head. The Essential Janis Joplin is a tribute to one of the most influential and powerful voices in rock history, who died tragically at the age of 27 in 1970.
